UDT forklift exam: a practical preparation guide

Prepare for the theory and practical parts, check the fee and organise your study sessions.

Prepare for both parts

The UDT exam includes theory and practical assessment. Working through questions helps you understand the rules, but it does not replace practice on equipment. Make two short lists: topics you need to understand and actions you need to practise with an instructor. If an action is unclear, discuss it before attempting it. Choosing the correct answer on a screen does not show that you can perform the same task safely on a machine.

First, check your category. Standard forklift trucks and specialised forklifts appear in different sections of the trainer. Compare your course description, the organiser’s information and the category you select. If the names differ, ask the organiser which qualification scope your training covers.

Understand the practice test format

UDT describes the theory part as a written test from a generated set of questions. Training centres commonly describe fifteen questions with four options, one correct answer, a pass at eleven correct answers and thirty minutes. The simulator uses that format. It is a format reported by training centres, rather than an officially published UDT scoring specification. Check the arrangements for your own examination with its organiser.

Read each complete question and every option before choosing. Pay attention to words describing an obligation, prohibition or condition. Avoid remembering only the answer letter. In the simulator you can return to questions and change your choices until submission. Afterwards, review lucky guesses as well as mistakes.

Check costs and arrangements

The UDT exam fee in 2026 is PLN 333.88, equal to 3.75% of the average salary. A failed attempt means paying the exam fee again. Training is a separate expense: a typical forklift course costs around PLN 1,000-1,300. When comparing courses, look at their content and practical training arrangements. The price alone does not tell you whether a course meets your needs.

Before the day, check the location, time and instructions from your organiser. Ask for the exact list of required documents and equipment. Prepare your identity document and confirmations according to that list. Do not rely on an unrelated online checklist. The exam is in Polish, so arrange a sworn translator in advance if your Polish is insufficient.

Use a repeatable study routine

Start with short sessions in question order. After answering, read the explanation and describe the deciding rule in your own words. For an illustrated question, enlarge the image and check its labels before answering. Record whether a mistake came from the rule, a word, a measurement or rushing. These are different problems and need different practice. A brief explanation of your mistake is more useful than a list of answer letters.

Next, try mixed questions and complete timed attempts. After each attempt, choose a few topics to review before starting another. Return to difficult questions later without looking at your previous answers. Collect unresolved questions for your instructor. A practice score helps you assess theory preparation, but does not guarantee a pass or confirm readiness to operate equipment independently.
