HDS crane qualifications: scope and UDT exam preparation

HDS crane qualifications in Poland cover transportable and portable cranes: certificate validity, the UDT theory test, OTC and the practical load route.

What HDS actually refers to

When you look for an HDS course, check the full Polish description: żurawie przewoźne i przenośne, meaning transportable and portable cranes. According to training centres, this is the scope people commonly call HDS. Compare the full equipment descriptions on the application and in the course offer. The word crane on its own isn't enough, because self-propelled mobile cranes belong to a different scope from transportable and portable ones.

A certificate for transportable and portable cranes is valid for 10 years and also lets you operate stationary cranes. That doesn't make you qualified for every type of crane. If you have a specific machine in mind for work, show the organiser its full description and confirm that the scope you've chosen fits the job. It's then easier to pick the course, fill in the application and find the right question bank.

Theory: HDS questions and the rules behind them

UDT theory is a written test based on a generated question set. Training centres describe the format as 15 questions, at least 11 correct answers and 30 minutes, but the official UDT scoring regulations don't contain these figures. Practise in that format, and confirm the arrangements for your own exam before the date.

Base your revision on the syllabus and UDT sample questions for your type of crane. For each question, name the condition that decides the answer. If there's a drawing, start with its labels and units. The published examples aren't the complete bank for a future exam. If you can't justify the correct answer, go back to the explanation or ask an instructor rather than memorising its letter.

HDS practice: OTC and the A > B > C > B > A route

The commission starts the practical part with one selected daily technical servicing task, called OTC. You can't repeat an unsuccessful task to correct it, and failing it ends the exam negatively. Rehearse the crane inspection under an instructor's supervision, with the equipment instructions to hand. Being able to explain what you're checking and how you judge the result is better preparation than memorising a list of terms.

The load-handling task follows the points A > B > C > B > A. In lessons, go through what each point means and how the whole operation runs at the prepared exam area. A second irregularity in the task, whether repeated or different, means a negative result. A dangerous situation, damage or an accident stops the exam immediately. Knowing the route letters is not the same as moving the load safely according to the crane's instructions.

Before you book the exam

Confirm that the organiser has prepared the area, the crane documentation and the attendance of a suitably qualified operator. Under the UDT guidelines, if any of this is missing, the commission withdraws from the exam with a negative result. Ask, too, how the lessons cover OTC and the load route. A good course description explains the practical preparation instead of just promising a quick pass.

While studying theory, note the topics that give you trouble and come back to them after a mock test. If you use a translation, check the Polish names of equipment and actions as well. In practical lessons, ask the instructor to assess a complete task from start to finish. An app score doesn't prove you're ready to operate on your own. Theory and safe work at the crane are separate things, and each needs its own preparation.

You'll find the Loader cranes (HDS) category in UDT Trener through the link below. Start with questions and explanations, then take a mock test and go over your mistakes. Bring any doubts about a specific crane to your practical lessons so you can connect what you've learned with operating the real machine.
