How to get a UDT operator certificate in Poland
How to get a UDT forklift or equipment certificate: application, exam fee, test, card delivery, category validity periods and renewal rules.
Steps 1-3: preparation and application
Step 1: decide how you'll prepare. A training course is optional, and a course completion document does not replace an operator qualification certificate. First work out which equipment scope you actually need for your job. Step 2: send a qualification assessment application, on paper or electronically, to the UDT office that covers your area. Each application is for one equipment type and one qualification scope.
Step 3: fill in your name, surname, address, PESEL, education, exam location, equipment type and qualification scope. If you don't have a PESEL, give your identity document, date of birth and citizenship instead. You also need consent from the equipment owner and the head of the unit. Check the address carefully, because that's where the card will be posted. You must be at least 18 and speak enough Polish to take the exam, or arrange a sworn interpreter.
Steps 4-6: payment, missing details and scheduling
Step 4: attach proof that you paid the 333,88 zł exam fee into the relevant UDT office's account. Make sure the payment is for the same qualification scope as your application. The training course is a separate cost. If the training centre passes the exam fee on for you, confirm that with them and ask what payment proof will go with your application.
Step 5: if you get a request to fill in missing information, do exactly what the notice says. The UDT FAQ gives 7 working days, and if you don't complete the application the procedure ends. Step 6: arrange the exam date. The exam should take place no later than 30 working days after you submit a complete application, unless you ask for a later date. The clock runs from the complete application, so keep your documents and any confirmation of corrections.
Steps 7-8: the exam and its result
Step 7: you sit the exam in front of a committee of at least 2 people. Theory is written, on paper or electronically, and the practical part tests how you operate the equipment. So you need to understand the questions and also carry out tasks safely. A good score in an app doesn't prove you're ready to operate equipment at work.
Step 8: you get the result straight after the exam. To pass, you need both parts. If you fail, the next attempt means a new application and another fee. Before you start preparing again, pin down which topic or action gave you trouble and work on it with an instructor.
Steps 9-10: your card and where it is valid
Step 9: the plastic qualification card is posted to the address on your application. In eUDT you can generate a confirmation with a QR code. When the card arrives, check your personal details, equipment scope and expiry date. Keep them somewhere easy to find, because you'll need them when you change jobs or apply for renewal.
Step 10: think about where you'll be working. A UDT certificate is valid only in Poland, and a Polish card does not automatically let you work in another country. Before taking a job abroad, check the local requirements with the employer and the relevant authority.
Validity periods by equipment scope
Forklift certificates and certificates for other equipment have different validity periods. Course adverts often make scopes sound alike, so the table lists them separately. According to training centres, II WJO means ordinary forklifts and I WJO means specialised ones. These abbreviations are not category names in the current regulation, so compare the full equipment description with your certificate.
The scope for portable and transportable HDS cranes also covers stationary cranes. Don't assume the same applies to other equipment with a similar name. Pick training based on the full scope you plan to apply for, not just the label on the course advert.
| Qualification scope | Validity |
|---|---|
| Forklifts without a boom or a person elevated with the load | 10 years |
| Forklifts with a boom or a person elevated with the load | 5 years |
| General-purpose overhead cranes, hoists and winches | 10 years |
| General and special-purpose overhead cranes, hoists and winches | 5 years |
| Mobile elevating work platforms | 5 years |
| Stationary, suspended and mast platforms | 10 years |
| Portable and transportable HDS cranes | 10 years |
| Mobile cranes | 5 years |
Renewal and your next preparation step
Renewal is free. Apply no later than 3 months before expiry. Under UDT's rules for accepting applications, it won't take one earlier than 2 years before expiry. To qualify, you must have done the work covered by the certificate for at least 3 of its last 5 years of validity and submit a declaration saying so. You apply to the unit that issued the certificate, on paper or through eUDT with a trusted profile or qualified signature. The new period starts when the old certificate expires.
Start preparing in UDT Trener with the Forklifts or Specialised forklifts question bank, whichever matches your application. For other equipment, the links below take you to Mobile platforms, Overhead cranes, Special-purpose overhead cranes and HDS cranes. Practise questions alongside supervised training on the equipment. And write your renewal date down separately: a mock exam result does not renew your certificate.
