UDT qualification validity: five or ten years?

Check your certificate, distinguish equipment categories and prepare for renewal enquiries.

Start with your own certificate

Qualification certificates issued from 1 June 2019 are valid for five or ten years, depending on the equipment. Do not decide your expiry date only from a course name or a colleague’s recollection. Read the scope and date on your own document. Machines with similar uses can fall into different groups, so the everyday name of the equipment does not settle the question.

Keep a readable copy for your own records and put the date in your calendar. Check that all category details are visible. If part of the document is unreadable, clarify it with the relevant office before planning further action. This guide explains a general approach; it does not verify a particular certificate or replace current information from the authority.

Compare the full qualification scope

Forklift trucks excluding specialised types, commonly identified as II WJO, have a ten-year period. General-purpose overhead cranes also have a ten-year period. Specialised forklifts, identified as I WJO, have a five-year period. Five years also applies to the scope covering general and special-purpose cranes. Compare the complete group description rather than recognising only one familiar word in the machine name.

These examples do not cover every type of equipment under technical supervision. If your category is absent, do not assign it a period by resemblance to another. Check your certificate and UDT information for the exact scope. If you hold several certificates, track each date separately. One document’s expiry does not automatically tell you whether another remains valid.

Check older indefinite certificates

If you have an older certificate issued without an expiry date, do not stop checking just because no date is printed. Its treatment depends on the document and applicable rules. This guide does not give a single deadline for every older certificate. Read current UDT guidance or ask about your own document. Another person’s example is not enough, especially if their category or issue date differs from yours.

Before contacting the office, prepare the issue date and precise qualification scope. Ask whether the document remains valid, which procedure applies and what information you need next. Avoid posting a complete certificate in a public discussion. Use an appropriate contact channel and share the details necessary for a reply. Keep the clarification with your own records so you can refer to it later.

Prepare for renewal and refresh your knowledge

Address renewal well before you need a decision. Check current UDT information for requirements, deadlines, the relevant form and submission method. Do not assume that taking another course automatically extends an existing certificate. List missing details and clarify uncertain points for your circumstances. Save confirmations and replies. This separates information actually provided about your document from assumptions based on other people’s situations.

It is also a useful time to revise equipment checks, safe actions and chart reading. Mark topics you have not used recently. The trainer can reveal gaps in theory, but does not renew qualifications or replace the required procedure. Discuss practical uncertainties with an instructor using the relevant equipment. Afterwards, revisit difficult questions without hints and check that you can explain the answer instead of merely recognising a familiar option.
